Surgery Instructions

Information for patients having surgery

If you have any questions regarding your upcoming surgery, please do not hesitate to contact his rooms at 03 8586 1288. Alternatively, you can email him directly at jkam @ balwyneye.com.au and he will usually respond to you within 24 hours during the weekdays.

 

The following instructions only apply to Dr Kam’s patients having cataract surgery:

Pre-operative instructions for Cataract Surgery

  • Do not apply make up on your eyelids on the day of surgery. Try to keep the face as clean as possible.
  • You should not eat or drink 6 hours before surgery. Your admission and fasting instructions will be confirmed by the day surgery hospital a few days prior to your operation date.
  • Dr Kam will call you one evening in the week before surgery to discuss any questions you have, usually on a Tuesday night.
  • Please call Dr Kam’s rooms on 03 8586 1288 if you have not received instructions from the hospital 2 days before your operation date.

Post-Operative Instructions for Cataract Surgery

  • Do not remove your eye pad. We will do this at your first post-op visit the day after your surgery
  • Do not wet your eye pad
  • Do not rub or put pressure on the operated eye
  • Do not drive after surgery until you check with Dr Kam
  • Do not shampoo your hair at all until you see Dr Kam
  • When permitted to shampoo your hair be careful to avoid soap or water getting into your eye
  • Clean lids gently with a clean moist face washer or cotton ball and sterile saline
  • Avoid dusty areas
  • Do not vacuum the house yourself for 2 weeks after surgery
  • Avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting for 2 weeks after surgery
  • No swimming or hydrotherapy for 4 weeks after surgery
  • You may use your old glasses until your refraction is checked and new glasses are prescribed, approximately four to six weeks after surgery. Alternatively, you may choose to go without any glasses.
  • Wear sunglasses outside, preferably with side shields (please bring to your first appointment after surgery)
  • Sleep with the plastic shield taped in place for one week
  • Try not to sleep on operated side

Instructions for eye drops

  • Always wash your hands before instilling drops.
  • Instill drops by pulling lower lid down and putting the drop in the pocket between the eye and the lower lid.
  • Drops should be separated by at least 5 minutes.
  • Chloramphenicol / Chlorsig x 4 times per day
  • Prednefrin Forte x 4 times per day
  • Please contact Dr Kam if you develop any significant pain or a reduction in your vision. He can be contacted through his rooms or in an emergency, if after hours, through the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital.

  • Do not apply make up on your eyelids on the day of surgery. Try to keep the face as clean as possible.

Post-operative instructions following eyelid Surgery

  • Remove the eye patch the morning after surgery (if any)
  • Apply the prescribed ointment to the suture line three times a day for one week.
  • Chloramphenicol / Chlorsig ointment x 3 times per day
  • Take 1 to 2 Panadol or Panadeine tablets every 6 hours as needed for pain
  • To minimize swelling try and sleep with two pillows at night
